What is bismuth? By Clint Dowdell

So I am constantly letting people know that Nude by Nature doesn’t contain Bismuth Oxychloride, and I know you appreciate it, but I also recognize that, like me many moons ago, most don’t know what it is. So I thought it was time to bring everyone up to speed on this nasty little ingredient used in so many of our competitors products.

Bismuth is used in many make-up products and provides “slip” (easy application and slide across the skin). It has a pearlescent glow and creates a glow. So not everything Bismuth does is bad. But let me ask you, after using make-up containing Bismuth have you ever experienced redness, irritation, itchiness, small bumps or pustules, burning or swelling? Then this is due to bismuth!

I wanted to give you a little more insight and I’ve attached one of my favorite snippets from an article so you don’t just take my word for it:

“Skin irritation from bismuth oxychloride is not unusual. According the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for bismuth oxychloride, there is a risk of it being a potential irritant to humans when it comes in contact with the skin or eyes. It is also imperative that bismuth oxychloride be free from toxins when it hits the market.

The FDA does have standards outlining this, and in their Electronic Code of Federal Regulations they dictate the composition must be free of impurities except lead, arsenic, volatile matter and mercury in specific amounts and must be 98% bismuth oxychloride.”*

The exciting thing is, Nude offers all of its airbrushed, flawless effects without the use of Bismuth! So now I hope you are satisfied with the knowledge that you are truly making the best decision for your skin and your make-up!
